Your bridal jewellery will be in almost every photograph of your wedding. It also has to sit comfortably for hours, through rituals, dancing and greeting hundreds of guests. Choosing it well is less about following trends and more about understanding what works with your outfit, your neckline and your face.
Here is the approach we use with brides in our Udaipur showroom.
Finalise your lehenga or saree first, or at least its colour, work and neckline. Jewellery chosen before the outfit almost always needs changing. Bring a photograph or a fabric swatch when you shop, so you can hold pieces against it.
Long jhumkas and chandbalis lengthen a round face. Wider earrings and studs balance a long face. If you are wearing a heavy maang tikka and nath, keep the earrings slightly lighter so the face does not feel crowded.
Heavy earrings can be supported with sahare, the fine chains that run into the hair. Ask for adjustable lengths on necklaces, and try everything on for at least ten minutes before deciding. Something that feels fine for a minute can be painful after three hours.
The smaller pieces finish the look and are easy to leave until the last minute. Plan for the maang tikka or borla, the nath, haathphool, kamarbandh, payal and bichhiya along with the main set. Choose them in the same finish and metal tone so the whole look feels considered, not assembled.
Udaipur weddings often move between a palace courtyard, a lakeside lawn and an indoor ballroom. Gold and polki glow beautifully in warm evening light and candlelight. Diamonds come alive under bright indoor lighting. For daytime functions outdoors, lighter pieces and softer stones look more natural in photographs.
The best bridal jewellery is not only worn once. When choosing, ask yourself which pieces you will wear again for family weddings, festivals and anniversaries. A necklace that can be separated into two shorter pieces, or earrings that work with both lehengas and sarees, will give you far more use over the years.
The main bridal set is usually worn for the pheras. For the mehendi, haldi, sangeet and reception, lighter pieces in gold, polki or diamonds give you variety without the weight, and they are far more likely to be worn again after the wedding.
Look for the BIS hallmark and HUID on gold, ask for certificates for diamonds and polki, and make sure the bill shows weight, purity, rate and making charges separately. Our hallmark guide explains what each mark means.
Give yourself time. Start shopping three to six months before the wedding, try combinations with your outfits, and do not be rushed into a decision. For a function-by-function plan, read our complete bridal jewellery guide for Udaipur brides.
