In many Indian homes, Akshaya Tritiya is the one day in the year when nobody questions a gold purchase. Parents buy a coin for each child. Families book wedding jewellery. Even people who never wear gold often pick up something small. But why this day in particular, and what is actually worth buying?
Akshaya Tritiya falls on the third day of the bright half of the month of Vaishakha, usually in April or May. The word akshaya means never diminishing. The belief is simple: whatever you begin or acquire on this day keeps growing. That is why it is considered a good day to start a business, buy a home, get married or buy gold.
Different families will tell you different stories. In one, Lord Krishna gave Sudama endless prosperity after receiving a humble gift of rice. In another, the Pandavas received the Akshaya Patra, a vessel that never ran out of food. The day is also linked with Lord Parashurama and with the River Ganga coming down to earth. The common thread is abundance, and gold, which never loses its value or its shine, became the natural way to mark it.
Tradition aside, there is a sensible side to the habit. Gold has been a dependable store of value for Indian families for generations. Buying a little every year, rather than a lot at once, spreads the cost and builds savings that can later become wedding jewellery or be used in an emergency. Akshaya Tritiya simply gives that habit a fixed date in the calendar.
Our guide to checking the BIS hallmark explains each mark in detail.
Coins and bars are the simplest form of gold to buy, keep and sell. There is no design to go out of fashion and the making charge is low. Jewellery costs more to make, but you can wear it, enjoy it and pass it on. Many families do both: a coin for savings and a small piece of jewellery to wear on the day itself.
If you buy coins, keep the bill and the original packaging. They make resale or exchange simpler later on.
A tradition many families follow is to buy one coin for each child every Akshaya Tritiya. Over fifteen or twenty years, those coins quietly add up to a meaningful amount of gold, ready for a wedding, higher studies or simply a safety net. It is a small, regular step that feels special because of the day.
If gold feels too expensive this year, silver is a perfectly auspicious choice. Silver coins, a small Lakshmi idol or pooja items keep the spirit of the day without stretching the budget, and they are lovely to gift to elders.
Jewellery showrooms are at their busiest on the day itself. If you can, drop in a few days earlier just to look at designs and compare weights. On Akshaya Tritiya you will then know exactly what you like, and the visit will be far calmer.
